Sharing the site of the Great Pyramids of Giza are a number of Mastabas. These
are constructions in the form of cut off pyramids that were built for dignities
of the Pharaoh. Governors, Visers, High Priests are typical of the members
of the king’s court that these tombs were built.
One that is most famous is the tomb of Cheop’s mother that had been
moved from Saqqarah out of fear of grave robbers. The sarcophagus was already
empty at the time of the moving, but I doubt the court had the courage to
tell the king.
The false door is a stone cut impression of a door that is not. The cylindrical
stone at the top is a representation of a rolled mat. Often the entrance was
found on the top of the stone Mastaba.
