THE GREAT CITY OF THE DEAD
Saqqarah is situated in the desert on the fringe of the last palm vegetation
not far from the old city of Hikaptah more commonly known as Memphis.
The most spectacular sites are that of the Djoser’s Step Pyramid built
from adobes and the stone a thirty-two room Mastaba from the sixth dynasty,
further down the road, built for Mereruka.
Unfortunately the pyramid of Teti looks like a giant sand dune, but visiting
the tomb is a spectacular discovery of massive texts carved into the walls
of this impressive crypt. I did notice some early graffiti from early nineteenth
century, and was particularly taken by the appearance of the name Kym.
